The piece I focused on was a floral hat. The hat is part of an entire traditional garment made in Hungary.
The hat's base is in a cone shape, and is made of fabric. The fabric has different patterned sections. The bottom section has red, green, yellow and white designs on a blue background. Pink leaves and red and white flowers are affixed to one side. Brown branches spring up from this side, with smaller flowers along the branches. These flowers are made of paper, fading from cream to pink in their centers. The branches are made of wire wrapped in paper. The paper has been peeled to make leaves. The flowers on the hat quiver since they're so delicate. When the hat was worn, the flowers must've had much greater movement.
This hat relates to the orchid mask made by Casey Curran, so perhaps it had some influence when it was made, or was part of some movement. The hat could be influential in my work, as the idea of paper flowers is interesting. They have a different movement to them than real flowers. The flowers and leaves on the side of the hat look exactly like the kind of thing you'd find in the fake bouquet section at craft stores, so perhaps this hat will be influential for cheap florists.
