Sanroman deals a
lot with with cultural issues. The show Proyecto Civico dealt with Mexico's
drug trafficking issues, and was presented in the midst of trafficking's peak.
The timing was daring and showy, which seems to be a good tactic in making
people aware. The art that she curates tends to come together for some grand
purpose. Curating brings together different pieces and amplifies a collective message.
Each individual work might have its own goal, but in coming together, the
individual pieces can lose their own meaning for the sake of some large encompassing
idea. Sanroman talked to a lot of the artists involved in her shows to make
sure everyone understood the feel and message of the show. I feel like talking
to the artist and making sure they agree isn't the most important though. If an
artist agrees to showing their work in a show, what's more important is if the
piece itself fits with the message. If the goals of the piece and the show
don't coincide, that can be an issue. I think curating could be an enjoyable
profession, but Sanroman didn't really express that side. I think to her, it
feels more like a civil responsibility.
